May is a busy month in the village with the usual societies and meetings plus the ‘village clean up’, the Parish Council Annual Meeting and the Boot Fair followed by the Jubilee weekend (Barn Dance & Hog Roast)at the beginning of June.

The Parish Council Annual Meeting is your chance to ‘grill’ your local councillors and suggest ideas for the following year. With the prospect of hundreds of new houses at Sholden do we want more traffic calming? Should the council do more or less for the Jubilee and to celebrate the London Olympics? Have you ideas for the grants the council can give? Come to the meeting and give your views and support.(PS)

We would be grateful to receive any items for the next  edition before the 20th of the month to

or telephone 364457.

Anyone wishing to advertise in subsequent issues should produce 420 copies on an A5 flyer - these will then be delivered  to the whole parish for £10 - telephone Peter Hambrook on 3

CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS

 Great Mongeham Society

On 19 April society member Paul Wells, in his role as the Treasurer of the Western Heights Preservation Trust, gave a very well illustrated and researched presentation on the history of the Western Heights in Dover from its earliest use as a position for lighthouses through its various military roles during periods of historic conflict. Many of the Society's members had been on the excellent guided tour given by Paul on our visit to the Drop Redoubt last year and were pleased to see more photographs of buildings now long gone as well as those of The Grand Shaft and other areas we had not managed to reach that evening. Many of us will be returning there as it is a wonderful structure capable of being the centre of a great cultural renaissance in this part of Kent.(S. A-W)

In July there will be an open day with the re-enactment company at Western Heights

May 17th - Alan Fox will talk on ' My Life in Silver’. Visitors and new members welcome, 7.30pm start in the parish hall.

August 16th -  a visit to Goodnestone Park will replace the printed visit to Brogdale

The Drop In

Thanks to all who supported the sale at the Drop In on Thursday 5th April. Together with the Hot Cross Buns that were sold, a profit of £20 was made for Parish Hall Funds. Call in at the hall any Thursday Morning at 10am for a coffee and a chat and possibly pick up a bargain from the produce stall.  (BS)

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society

The Spring Show on the 4th April was a delight as always. Carol and her team are to be congratulated on their hard work as the Hall looked beautiful, full of colour and scent.

However 3 of our members were missing - Sue Ford, Keith Atkinson, and Bill Haines. Best wishes for their speedy recovery were sent. Secretary Liz was an able substitute Chairman and whilst judging was going on kept us entertained with a light hearted quiz.

Judges Jean and Peter Sudell were very complimentary about the quality and number of entries, and Mrs Keys-Evans expressed warm approval of the Floral Art. Two cups were awarded. Best Bloom in the Show was awarded to Alan Ford and 'Most Points in the Show ' to Alan Ford and Brian Knight who tied on points.

Next meeting May 2nd when the speaker will be Mr. J. Wellard on the theme of Goodnestone Park. (JB)

Saint Martin’s WI

Saint Martin’s WI celebrated their 39th birthday with iced cake and a slide talk on India. The annual competition award was given to Wendy Marshall and Margaret Barker with dual top points. On May 10th there will be a members’ craft and hobbies exhibition. New members and visitors welcome to the hall 7.30pm. (P.S-B)

The Mongeham Singers will be meeting in May on the 2nd, 16th and 30th.  We meet at 7.30 at the Church .  Just turn up if you like the idea of singing for fun.  (VR)

Village Cleanup

The Society will be joining the Parish Council in a Village Cleanup during the week from Tuesday May 8th. Contact 375420 if you can help with an hour or two. Equipment supplied. PS-B

Bingo Thursday 24th at 7.15 for eyes down at 7.30pm.

Jan Anton's Dancers

Mongeham Parish Hall plays host twice a week to Jan Anton's Dancers who are currently in rehearsals for this year’s summer show TOTALLY DANCE 2012 at the Astor Theatre on June 10th at 5pm. This is a show purely for lovers of dance from the littlest tiny tot to some cool mature tappers and everything in between. Jan's Dancers and Keep-Fit ladies and gents also took part last year, dancing in the Pantomime Dick Whittington with the New Ash Players. A fun time was had by all, playing to packed houses every night. On July 14th just before the end of the summer term the dancers will take part in graded examinations qualifying them to return in September in higher grades of Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Acrobatics. The Modern Street Jazz Troupe has been invited to participate in a Gala Evening at Her Majesty's Theatre in the West End of London which we will be working hard to perfect for the autumn.  Anyone interested in joining this successful group should  phone Jan on 07760150233 / 01304 813749. (JA)
