Sunday, 27th November          Advent no flowers—Lesley to complete Advent Wreath

There will be no flowers during Advent but I am looking for volunteers to help me on Saturday, 17th December.  I would like to put up the Christmas Tree, decorate window sills with greenery and candles for the Carol Service and prepare the Stable for the Crib Service on the 18th December.  If you are able to help for an hour or two I aim to be at the Church from 10 am.  Please contact Lesley on 360654.

Volunteers Wanted St. Martin’s Church is having an extra ‘autumn’ clear up in the church yard on Saturday, 12th November, 2011 from 10 am.  We need all the help we can get.  If you can spare an hour or two to help in any way, please come along.  There is plenty of trimming back of the summer’s growth and general tidying up to do before the winter really sets in.  Please help us to keep our Church yard as presentable as always.  This is also a good opportunity to say a big thank you to Colin who keeps the grass trimmed etc. all the year round.  PH

Great Mongeham Society  Could You Be A Medieval? Alex and Pam Summers, 20th October 2011.  The evening's interestingly entitled lecture was presented as a quiz covering all aspects of medieval life. We learned that an "ale passion" was a hangover, that a "hussy" was a good housewife, but the meaning has changed since then, that the traditional thing to do on the 20th of  December was to plant your onions, whilst on Shrove Tuesday priests and  pious men would shave and cut there hair and that a "baxter" was  a female baker, the women tending to specialize in cakes and pastries. The medieval period between the black death which caused the demise of half the population of England and the invention of printing, saw the end of feudalism and the rise of landless workers able to demand wages.
Alex and Pam brought in many artifacts that could be found in the medieval period such as 'vair', the extremely soft fur made from the underbelly of the European Grey Squirrel which was highly prized and was reserved for royalty. There were also museum quality replicas of coins
such as angels and groats. An entertaining way to pick up some fascinating information. SA-W

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society  Our October meeting was the Autumn Show, what with variable weather just before the show and coming soon after the summer show at the end of August, entries were down.  However, there was still a good display of flowers especially dahlias, pot plants and vegetables etc. There were two cups awarded, the cup for the most points in show went to Bill Haynes and the Apple cup was awarded jointly to two villagers, Anne Herbert and Mike Blee (obviously apples like the Great Mongeham soil).                                   JB

Saint Martins WI At the AGM in October Pam Oiller was elected as the President for the next 12 months and a full committee will support her.  The Undercroft sale held in September was very well supported and helps the WI funds.

The Christmas decorations will be put up in the Parish Hall on Sunday November 27th for all to enjoy.                                                                                                                                        PSB

The Harvest Supper held in the Parish Hall on Saturday, 1st October was a good fun evening with plenty of food and light entertainment afterwards.  Although numbers were down on last year, we still raised £200 profit which was shared equally between the local hospice and our link in Madagascar.  Many thanks to those who kindly donated raffle prizes, helped prepare the food and waited at the tables during the evening.                                                                     PH

Val's North Downs Way Walk for Charity  Just to let those, who kindly gave towards my North Downs Way challenge know, we have made a total of £815 so far and still counting. This money will go towards The Teenage Cancer Trust and Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.
Jim and I survived the 130 miles with little ill effects except aching legs and feet, so thank you so much all who gave so kindly and generously to a very good cause.                                     VR
Val has attended Jan’s Keep Fit Class held in the Parish Hall every Monday for over a year and feels that it has made so much difference to her stamina, health and well being and would like to pass the message on to local people in her age group.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as part of Great Mongeham celebrations, your Parish Council is looking into presenting village children of school age and under with a specially minted celebratory coin.  Please remember to fill in and return the enclosed flyer as soon as possible.     PH

Thanks go to Brian Knight for looking after the Parish Hall window boxes.  The plants always look lovely and his help is much appreciated.
