Sunday, 2nd October Harvest Festival—Back to Church Sunday 10.00 am
Back to Church Sunday is celebrated each year, usually on the last Sunday of September and will be so in many churches throughout the country this year. The idea is that we welcome back people to church, those who used to come, and those who have never been. It is being celebrated this year in St. Martin’s Church, Great Mongeham on Sunday, 2nd October at our 10 am traditional Harvest Festival Service. This service caters for all ages and we feel that it is the right service to celebrate back to church for us. The church will be decorated with a harvest theme and a place in the service for children to offer their gifts of produce etc. It is then usually offered for sale by donation after the service and the proceeds put to a worthy cause. Any left over produce is donated to St. Martin Emmaus at Dover so nothing is wasted. Please see if you can make a date and come along to this happy occasion, make a note of the date, it will be fun.
Great Mongeham Handbells St. Martin’s Handbells have returned to the Church. Completely refurbished, polished, gleaming and retuned, they are set to last for many years to come. The Handbells have new leather handles and clappers, plus a new additional bell which adds to the range of tunes and harmonies that can be played.
The Handbell Ringers are already practising for the Harvest Festival Service in October.
New Handbell Ringers are most welcome to the practices. These are held fortnightly after Sunday worship at St. Martin’s Church. Ability to read music is not required. All are welcome to try or listen to these beautiful Handbells. For further information please contact Audrey Pitchford Tel. No. (01304) 362202.

CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS
Great Mongeham Horticultural
Society The August meeting was in the Parish
Hall on the 3rd August and despite holidays etc. was well attended.
District Councillors Report Recently the District Council issued its annual State of The District Report. Dover District Council, like others, is facing unprecedented challenges to its budget and services, as a result of a number of external factors. This not only means difficult decisions have to be made, but it also opens opportunities for reshaping our services to better serve our communities and maximise the potential of partnership working. The Council is addressing these challenges through a mixture of:
* Service prioritisation
* Restructuring the organisation
* Sharing services with other councils
* Transforming services to be more efficient and reduce cost.
Shared services: Dover District Council is the most participative of the East Kent authorities and is delivering numerous shared services. The report will be used to help shape future service provision by the council and its partners. The full report is available on the councils website at
http://www.dover.gov.uk/councillors/council_meetings/update/docs/agendacouncil270711.pdf at agenda item 10 Nick and Steve
Groups using the Parish Hall, closed for August, restart from September 5th onwards. Group Organiser’s phone numbers are on the back of this Newsletter and in the Notice Board outside the Hall.
Corners July 2011 A week of dry weather and the lovely aspect of Northbourne Playing Field provided an agreeable backdrop to another happy and successful Corners event. Forty-five children aged from five to eleven years of age attended the day long sessions and a team of ten teenagers energetically assisted with the games, action songs and craft activities.
Jim and Elizabeth McConnell’s daughter, Ruth travelled up from Bristol to lead the Bible based stories which this year focussed on the disciple, Peter. More than ten adults from churches in Great Mongeham, Northbourne and Eastry made a happy group of volunteers to provide games, crafts, music and refreshments. On Friday afternoon parents were invited to see a display of the children’s art work and watch the children’s very enjoyable talent show. Bob and June deserve special thanks for all their hard work in coordinating this week of mission to young people. JE
Helen and Ian’s Wedding I would like to thank the bell ringers, the flower arrangers, and St. Clement’s Church Choir and organist Robert, for such a wonderful and beautiful occasion. It was a lovely and very moving Service, with particular thanks to Peter for all he did that day, the ceremony meant a great deal to all our family and friends. This was indeed a truly memorable and very special day! Thank you. Sue Morgan

Great Mongeham Society Members and visitors enjoyed a stroll round Great Mongeham looking at points of interest in St. Martin’s Church and historical houses in the village.
Many thanks to Jim Rees for leading the walk and sharing his in-depth knowledge.

Do you have a new neighbour? If so please let the Great Mongeham Society know. They have a welcome leaflet giving snippets of information to help newcomers find their way around. It gives details of village businesses, trains, buses, postal collections, councillors, doctor’s surgeries, local newsagents, vets etc. There is also a map of footpaths in the village.
Ring Diana Knight, 375420, to get a leaflet delivered. DK
I am 70 this year and am walking the North Downs Way (about 130 miles) as a Big Birthday Challenge and raising money for The Teenage Cancer Trust and the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. I start at Farnham, Surrey on 21st September and arrive in Dover on 4th October - 13 days in total. So if villagers who haven't already would like to sponsor me (I have raised £480 so far) then that would be really fantastic. I have a Justgiving site:
http://www.justgiving.com/Valerie-Rees or give to me and I will send to the two charities direct. These are both such worthwhile causes and do excellent work for the youngsters. VR
