CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society Another great Show—125 entries from 21 members turned the village hall into a feast of colour and scent at our October meeting. The weather this summer has not been very helpful to gardeners, and the judges were very complimentary at the way difficulties had been overcome. Eventually the cup for most points in show was awarded jointly to Peter Aplin and Bill Haines. The John Catherick Apple Cup went to Peter Aplin and the Special vegetable prize to Alan Ford.

With the judges deliberating one of our new members told us all about the allotment she has been inspired into taking. She asked for and obtained lots of advice and we all wished her good luck. The next meeting is the AGM—any budding committee members please speak to Keith. JB

Saint Martin’s W.I. After a short talk by Ros Shawcross about the White Cross Mission voting took place and eight committee members were named with Mrs. Gloria Hayman elected as the President. Many thanks were given to Mrs. Jennifer Windsor past President and the out going committee for their hard work. PSB

Great Mongeham Society Rev. Peter Hambrook spoke about the village in war time. The first land mine and where it landed, the gun emplacements and military camps. Exciting times for the young—it was good to welcome many visitors especially the young people. PSB

Beaux and Belles sang The Bells of St. Mary’s and Lili Marlene at the St. Leonard’s Fund Raising Music and Singing Evening during October and everyone enjoyed the evening. VR

Great Mongeham Art Show The Friend’s of St. Martin’s would like to thank everyone who exhibited, helped or supported the Annual Art Show in St. Martin’s Church and made it such an enjoyable occasion. With all your help, a profit of over £500 was made which will go towards the refurbishment of the churchyard wall. WM

Harvest Supper Quiz was a great success which was enjoyed by all. Many thanks go to Ian Lawrence, the quiz master and Lesley Lawrence for organising the event and for cooking four of the soups and to Alison Semple for the other two. Peter made the wholemeal bread. The evening made a profit of £468.00 which was divided equally between the Pilgrim’s Hospice and Madagascar.

Village Design Document This attractive, full-colour booklet of the village is available, free to residents, by calling Bob Kersey on 01304 373299. It can then be delivered to your door. A special invitation is extended to new-comers to take advantage of this offer to find out more about our village.

Great Mongeham Shotokan Karate Club At the gradings held recently the results were as follows: Red Belts—Liam Allen, Shannon Hill, Meghan Allen. Purple Belts—Dave Waterman,

Blair Brookfield. Brown Belt—Charlotte Waterman. Brown/White Belt—Brandon Virtue.

Brown/Red Belt—Heather Keith. Students have worked hard and deserve congratulations for their efforts. The club trains every Monday and Wednesday at Great Mongeham Parish Hall from 6.30 pm However it is advisable to phone Jan on 01304 367001 in the first instance as spaces are limited.

St. Martin’s Handbell Ringing Group It is hoped to reform the group, if there is enough interest. We need at least six people and then it might be possible to play some carols at Christmas. Musical experience or the ability to read music is not necessary. If you are interested please contact Audrey Pitchford telephone 01304 362202.

To all those who live by the Three Horseshoes Public House

We understand that one or two of our neighbours have been disturbed recently due to events held in our garden and we would like to sincerely apologise for this. We have held six events this year, most of them charitable events and we understand that most of them have been in August and September. We would like to inform our neighbours that we currently have no more outside events planned for the year and invite them to join us for a drink. The pub is a wonderful place with great customers and a relaxed environment. We do not have fighting or trouble makers and with the help of our customers and the above mentioned events we have managed to raise in excess of £3000 for the Guide Dogs this year. If you just give us the chance you will find that the last thing we want to do is to upset our neighbours in any way. We just want to make a living and unfortunately that means holding events from time to time. If anyone has any issues they would like to discuss, please feel free to pop in and see us or give us a call on 01304 375812. Thank you. Sam and Sarah Rodwell, The Three Horseshoes
