Funeral St. Martin’s Church Simon Frank Morgan on Thursday, 5th March.

Simon was born on 14th May, 1948 in Folkestone. From the age of 8, he was educated at the Royal Commercial Traveller’s School, Pinner.

After leaving school, Simon spent time working at Pearce Signs, Westwood, in the drawing office before training at Thanet Building School, prior to setting up his own successful business as an Architectural Draftsman, in Margate. He became involved in many interesting projects, in particular his award-winning re-design of St. John’s School buildings, which resulted in him being presented to Prince Charles and Archbishop Robert Runcie—a very proud achievement indeed.

Simon met Sue when they both played in the Ramsgate Youth Orchestra. They were married at St. John’s Church, Margate in 1976 and spent two happy years in their first home in Broadstairs, before moving to Great Mongeham 31 years ago. They quickly settled into village life, attending church here, where Simon was eventually elected Church Warden remaining in this position for more than 15 years.

Here in St. Martin’s Church, Simon oversaw the re-ordering of the Chancel and prepared drawings for the Upper Room above the Vestry, as well as drawing up plans for the alteration of the Parish Hall.

In 1982, their first daughter, Frances, was born, followed nearly three years later by their son Chris and then Helen in 1992. Simon had a variety of hobbies including the Deal and District Rifle Club, bee keeping, bell ringing and amateur radio. But maybe woodturning was his greatest love. He never needed an excuse to escape from the house for a while to ‘play on his lathe’!

Everyone will have many special memories of Simon, a true gentleman and a deeply committed Christian with a strong faith. He was a kind, caring, thoughtful husband, father and loyal friend who enjoyed those most special times away in his beloved Cotswolds.

May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, May the rains fall soft upon your fields And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society

The Club met on the 4th March in the Parish Hall and over 60 members heard a very interesting talk by Dr. Simon Charlesworth on ‘The Lavender Nursery’. Some excellent slides and many tips from an expert in the field. Our next meeting is on April 1st when we will hold our Spring Show, let us hope the weather will be kind in the last week of March, no frosts and high winds, so there is a good display of daffodils and tulips. JB

Great Mongeham Society members and visitors welcomed Catriona Blaker who spoke about Augustus Pugin. She showed many slides of his houses, churches and interior designs. I am sure many will make a return visit to The Grange at Ramsgate. PSB

Saint Martin’s W.I. Exotic birds, plants and wild life came to life with pictures, when Don Wilks took members and visitors to Costa Rica. PSB

Drop In Can you remember the year when the Drop In started? We know it has been running for over 15 years—time flies when you are having fun! Contact Patricia on 01304 364769. PSB

Snowdon Colliery Male Voice Choir Thirty five members sang to a capacity audience in Saint Martin’s Church on Friday, 20th March. Their programme included something for every taste with Welsh traditional, American spirituals, medleys from the shows and a rendering of Nessum Dorma which was amazing. Musical Director, Michael Lewis commented that the acoustics in the church were great and because of this they recorded the programme for a future C.D.

The evening raised £250—£50 for St. Martin’s Church and £200 for the Friends of St. Martin’s Church funds. It is hoped they will return. DK

Choir Group After listening to the wonderful singing on Friday evening, a few of us decided to try and form a light-hearted choir group centred in the village. At the moment we have no pianist and no choirmaster, but lots of enthusiasm. We are expecting this choir to be comprised of people who just want to sing and have fun.

If you are even a tiny bit interested please do call. It doesn’t matter if you ‘can’t sing’ - we can’t either so long as you are willing to have a go. Val Rees 373307 and Eileen Thomas 372555

Many thanks to all who have helped at the extraordinary church yard clear ups during the winter months. We shall not be doing any more until the autumn. Saturday, 12th September seems to be the likely date for those who would like to put it in their diary. PH

Chris Saville has kindly updated our village website to include old photographs of Great Mongeham. I am sure some of you will enjoy looking at them at the following link http://www.mongeham.co.uk/history/history1.shtml
