SEPTEMBER SERVICES 10.30 am Every Sunday 6.30 pm 3rd Sunday Evening

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society 67 Members attended the August meeting when the speaker was Gordon Francis whose talk on ‘Growing and Showing’ vegetables was very much appreciated. Chairman, Peter reminded the Club that the Summer Show and Boot Fair on 25th August was getting close and he hoped everyone was well prepared for it!

There is no meeting in September. J.B.

Great Mongeham Society The visit to Augustus Pugin’s House known as The Grange and St. Augustine’s Abbey Church in Ramsgate was very interesting. From a very knowledgeable guide, the members learnt so much about Pugin’s life in which he had 3 wives and 5 children and died at the age of forty. His work included, the design of the interiors for the Houses of Parliament especially in the House of Lords and in the Church of St. Giles, Cheadle.

He was known for his furniture design and stained glass and much more. Well worth a visit.

St. Martin’s W.I. enjoyed their walk from Walmer Castle to Kingsdown in August. A welcomed drink was taken in the garden of a local hostelry, in good weather. PSB

Toddlers and Families Playgroup restarts in the Village Hall on Monday, 14th September from 1.30—3.30 pm. The group offers a fun afternoon for children from 0 to 5 with craft activities, large and small play equipment, books, songs and refreshments. Cost per family £1.50. For more details telephone Wendy on 01304 239143 or just pop in to the Village Hall on Monday afternoons.

Church and Churchyard Clean Up Many thanks go to all those who kindly came along and joined the fellowship and hard work of the extra ordinary clean up in the church and churchyard. The idea was to reach the parts that ordinary cleaning and mowing can’t reach. In church there is no excuse now to count the cobwebs during the long boring sermons!

We also made good progress on the south side of the churchyard and have decided to have another go at other sections later this year. Volunteers will be very welcome to come along on 27th September from 10.00 am until 1.00 pm. The aim is to try and get the perimeter of the churchyard into some sort of order before next Spring. P.H.

Safer Summer Crime Prevention Advice

Burglary o Keep doors and windows shut if you are not in the room;
o Think about which windows you leave open in hot weather;
o Consider outside lighting - it helps keeps thieves at bay;
o Remember, some burglars could get through small spaces such as a cat or dog flap so, if in doubt, shut and lock it;
o Keep valuable garden equipment locked away - use a strong padlock;
o Make sure garden sheds are secured properly;

o Lock ladders away;
o Don't leave keys in obvious hiding places or near doors and windows;

Page 4 Great Mongeham Newsletter September 2008

o Mark your property - this helps deter burglars;
o Avoid leaving boxes and other packaging outside your home, as this could advertise what is inside your home to burglars;
o If you are offered second hand goods, think twice as they could be stolen - if you are suspicious, report it.

Theft from vehicles o If you are visiting beauty spots in the warm weather, secure your vehicle - just because you are somewhere rural does not mean thieves won't be there too;
o Take your valuables out of your vehicle when you leave it unattended. Don't be tempted to hide valuables in your boot or glove compartment - these are the first places a thief will look.
o Remove your portable sat nav, even if you are only leaving your car for a minute or two;
o Wipe any sat nav holder suction marks from your windscreen - they can be a giveaway to thieves;
o At night-time, park in well lit areas, covered by CCTV, if possible;
o Property mark items which have to stay inside your vehicle, for example, your stereo or baby seat.
