CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS

Great Mongeham Horticultural Society The August meeting was well attended and gardeners enjoyed a talk from Mr. D. March about his walled garden. Chairman, Peter Aplin announced the Clubs achievements at the Kent County Show and also congratulated individual members on their successful entries. Cups, certificates and rosettes were on display together with photographs of the presentations. J.B.

The Parish Hall Committee will consider applications for the placing of a fixed bench beside the hall. Placing and maintenance of a bench is the job of the provider. Applications to The Parish Hall Trustees, c/o 155 Mongeham Road, Great Mongeham, Deal, Kent. CT14 9LL. PSB

St. Martin’s W.I had a very enjoyable tour of Sandwich Guildhall in August, with Kevin Cook, Town Sargent as Guide. Members had an interesting and historical evening—well worth the visit.

Members are busy knitting coats and blankets for the Dog’s Trust with patterns they kindly provided. PSB

Bat Watch On Wednesday evening, 25th July, 2007 over fifty people came along to St. Martin’s Church to find out about the three varieties of bats that roost in the ancient building. A member of the The Kent Bat Group, Mrs. Shirley Thompson gave an illustrated talk full of fascinating information which delighted both adults and children. We were then introduced to Sid, a serotine bat which was unable to fly due to an injury. This close encounter with such a mysterious creature, fired everyone’s enthusiasm to take the electronic bat detectors into the church yard. The warm evening was perfect for witnessing the flying display. Thanks to everyone in the P.C.C. who organised such a successful event. Jennie Esposito

Toddlers and Families Playgroup restarts in the Parish Hall on Monday, 10th September from 1.30—3.30 pm. The group offers a fun afternoon for children from 0 to 5 with craft activities, large and small play equipment, books, songs and refreshments. Cost per family is £1.50.

For more details telephone Wendy on 01304 239143 or just pop in to the Parish Hall on Monday afternoons.

Three Horseshoes

District Council News

The year is now drawing to a close and it has been a very busy one for the district.

The election in May saw us trialling electronic counting. The council was one of the few local authorities to make this a success and we now look to the development of policies which will enable this technology to be used more widely.

During May, we had the opening of the Fowlmead Park. The park is now open 7 days per week and is proving very popular with families for a variety of pursuits including cycling, walking, bird watching and fossil hunting.

The park management is keen to improve the facilities and is keen to receive comments from the public. The issue of access by public transport is high on the agenda.

Expansion of the recycling programme is another key area of operations and this is progressing with an anticipated rollout during 2008.

We look forward to working with residents as well as supporting the parish council and other local organisations, to ensure that residents receive a high quality service from the council.

Nick and Steve—District Councillors
