The leaflet asks them to telephone an 090 number for further information. The call, which charged at £ 1.50 per minute, is likely to last a number of minutes.. 090 numbers are charged at a premium rate and it is very unlikely that a genuine delivery company would use this type of number. If you receive one of these leaflets contact Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 for further advice.

Ruby Joyce Catherick, late of 83 Mongeham Road, wife of the late Roy Catherick, passed away on 11th February, 2006 at QEQM Hospital, Margate.

Ruby was born in 1928, and spent all her life in the Deal area. She was born a twin to her sister Pearl and grew up with two brothers and three other sisters. She was educated at the local Catholic School, where despite suffering with speech and hearing difficulties did well in her schooling. After school she was employed by Haffenden's at Richborough.

She married Roy in 1950 and moved from Deal to Mongeham Road where they spent many happy years together, tending the garden, joining in village life until Roy died a few years back.. After Roy's death, with the help and kindness of friends and family, she was able to carry on living in Mongeham, moving out a few months ago, to go into St. Winifred's Nursing Home as her health deteriorated. She settled in and was happy there and loved by the staff. Ruby loved dancing in spite of her impaired hearing, a good game of cards and was an avid knitter. She always loved animals and had several pets. She was a member of the Great Mongeham Good Companions. She could always raise a smile and had a great sense of humour -always grateful for any help that people gave her.

She will be much missed in the community and we pass on our feelings of sadness to her remaining family at their sad loss.                                                                                    PH

A pleasant evening was had by all who attended the Madagascar Evening in the Parish Hall on 25th February. Thanks to the organisers who donated the profits to the Madagascar Fund. On Saturday, I8th March the Parish Hall was filled for the Lent Supper and Quiz. A very good selection of questions by Ian Lawrence and a supper of eleven variety's of home made soups were well received, on such a cold evening. Grateful thanks to the helpers and to all who came along and supported the evening which raised £500 for Rev. Georges, our link in Madagascar.                                                                                                                   PH/PSR

The Parish Hall Trustees held a meeting on I5th March and welcomed the good comments that have been given on the new ceiling heaters that have been installed. Other works have been set up for the coming months for the upkeep, improvement and safety of the hall.              PSB

The Leather Bottle held a St. Patrick's Night celebration on the 18th March. The raffle raised £130 which has kindly been donated for the fabric fund held by the Friends of St. Martins and is used for the upkeep of the Church. Many thanks to Joan who organised the evening.          PH

The Inaugural Meeting of the Great Mongeham Village Design Statement Group was held on Monday, 6th March with the election of Jim Rees as Chairman, Bob Kersey as Secretary, and Councillor Steve Manion as Treasurer. We have received an initial grant of £250 from the Parish Council and are applying for further funding from other sources, in order to engage a planning consultant and pay for a draft Design Statement document to be printed later this year. There is much work to be done as we have a vast amount of information in our files and some three hundred photographs of the village to sort through.

If you would like to take part in the work of the group, you will be made very welcome; please contact Bob Kersey on 373299.                                                                                          SB
