CLUB, SOCIETY AND VILLAGE REPORTS
Gt. Mongeham Horticultural Society held their first meeting of 2006 on 1st February, in the Parish Hall, and it was well attended. Guest Speaker, Roger Austen gave a very interesting talk on his childhood memories as a gamekeeper’s son. Seed potatoes and plastic pots to grow them in, were handed out to members for them to take part in the potato competition, ready for the weigh-in at the June meeting. JA

St. Martin’s W.I. in January, Steve Manion gave a talk with slides, on the progress of the Betteshanger Coalfields Regeneration scheme. It is hoped that the Country Park will now open in June, when members will look forward to their visit. The February meeting, had a Listener from the Samaritans talking about their voluntary work in general, and how to become a Listener for the charity.
In January, Great Mongeham Society members enjoyed a talk given by the East Kent Mercury’s Editor, Graham Smith showing front pages from the first issue over 100 years ago.
On a sunny, but chilly Sunday morning, members met with Andrew Oxford for a Field Walk to look for flints. It was an interesting couple of hours—we are not experts but have added a little knowledge to our ‘brains’.
Dave Mallinder told members about ‘Time’ at the February meeting. Some information was technical but very interesting with diagrams, so we knew what piece he was speaking about. From the start, just after the sundial to the present Quartz time pieces, we had a brief insight into Horology.
The 2007 programme of speakers and outings was touched on and it is hoped there is a variety of subject matter to interest all members. PSB
The new Parish Hall heaters are now installed and working. The Parish Hall committee thank the Coalfields Regeneration Trust for their assistance in obtaining a Grant to help pay for the heaters and Wyman’s Electricals of Sandwich who completed the work. PSB
Great Mongeham Good Companions will be restarting on Thursday, 2nd March at 2 pm until 4 pm after a two month break in case of bad weather. We are a friendly group who enjoy playing bingo, have a raffle and then break for a cup of tea and a good natter half way through—all helping us to keep lively! We also have a Savings Club drawn out in November. We have occasional outings—our next is to Leeds Castle. We are open to men and women—do come and join us.
