News from The Leather Bottle
The Raffle, put on and drawn at the senior citizens Christmas evening on 12th December, raised £200.00. The money has been presented to the Friends of Deal Hospital. Carol singing, which was put on for entertainment, by singers from St. Martins and their local Baptist friends, went down well and the proceeds of a bucket being passed around, during the evening raised £26.00 for the Friends of St. Martin’s Church. Many thanks to Joan and her customers for their kind donation. PH
News from The Three Horseshoes
A great time was had by all at the Carol Singing evening. St. Martin’s Handbells were last heard in the Three Horseshoes 70 years ago. My thanks to all who kindly organised the evening and a special thank you to Wendy for her generous buffet.
No events have been arranged during January but Wendy and Martin will always assure you of a welcome. In a short time, they are due to go on holiday to Goa in India and will make a visit to a local orphanage. They are planning to take a package of small gifts for the children. If anyone has any suitable donations please contact Wendy on Tel. 365812 or drop them in at the Three Horse Shoes. Please bear in mind the weight factor—we do not want to cause them excess baggage payments.

Great Mongeham Village Design Statement
Progress has continued steadily and the Steering Group met again on 9th December and were joined for this meeting by two planning officers from Dover District Council.
Clive Alexander, the Conservation Officer first spoke on what was required in a Village Design Statement and the processes involved in its preparation. Mike Ebbs, the Forward Planning Manager gave some advice on the status of the completed Statement. He indicated that the planners could refer to the VDS, in making planning decisions, so long as it can be shown that the correct consultation processes have been carried out. The District Council would also be carrying out consultation on the document, before it could be used as a supplementary planning guidance.
The Council officers were impressed that great efforts are being made to keep the whole community informed of what is going on, by the reports in this newsletter and the minutes of the steering group being published on the Great Mongeham website.
Once the work of the sub-groups has been completed, the next step will be to consult widely on how the village should develop. The form of the consultation will be discussed at the next meeting, on 13th January.
If anyone would like to take part in the work of the group you will be made very welcome, please contact Bob Kersey on 373299. BK
Great Mongeham Horticultural Society enjoyed their Christmas Party on 1st December 2004. Supper was provided by members themselves and everyone tucked into a great variety of tasty ‘homemade’ goodies— a great success. A light-hearted quiz produced lots of laughter and the evening ended with the presentation by Chairman Marlene, of the cups awarded to members who have accrued the most points annually; the Cup for Floral Art to Barbara O’Dell and the Cup for Vegetables to Alan Ford. Marlene also presented a bouquet to retiring Secretary, Doreen Talling, as a small token of gratitude for her enormous contribution to the Society. She will be a very hard act to follow!
